Sound & Color is Alabama Shakes’ second studio album, recorded over more than a year beginning in late 2013 without pre-written songs or a fixed end-goal; it is rooted in Southern rock and soul but expands into eclectic, experimental territory, incorporating jazz, cowpunk, hardcore punk, new wave, proto-punk, funk, blues, country, garage punk, punk rock, swamp rock, talking blues, space rock, psychedelic funk, R&B, stoner-desert rock, and grunge-funk fusion — all while drawing influence from artists including MC5, Erykah Badu, Curtis Mayfield, and the Strokes.
