Songs in A Minor
Alicia Keys · 2001
Songs in A Minor is a piano-led neo soul record rooted in classical technique, recorded across multiple New York-area studios—including Keys’ Harlem bedroom and the Queens basement she converted into KrucialKeys Studios—with minimal production, warm close-miked vocals, and structural clarity. It establishes Keys as a composer who treats piano not as colour but as architecture—and falls short where groove or rhythmic surprise is expected.
