Big Star’s Third/Sister Lovers is not a polished artefact—it is a document of dissolution. Recorded in late 1974 at Ardent Studios with producer Jim Dickinson, it features Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens working alongside a rotating group of Memphis musicians—including drummer Richard Rosebrough and vocalist Lesa Aldridge, whose parts were later erased. The sessions ended in early 1975 with 250 plain-label promos pressed, but label interest failed in New York and California. The band broke up before the album was titled. Dickinson framed his role as removing ‘oppressive production’ to enable Chilton’s integrity—not to shape a marketable product. The result is a stark, emotionally extreme, and stylistically fractured record that diverges entirely from Big Star’s earlier power-pop. Its cult status rests on its honesty, not its polish.
