Pacific Ocean Blue

Dennis Wilson · 1977

Pacific Ocean Blue is Dennis Wilson’s 1977 debut solo album — recorded at Brother Studios between autumn 1976 and spring 1977. It features grainy, soulful vocals, gospel choir augmentation on 'River Song', co-writes with Mike Love and Carl Wilson, and an unfinished vocal for 'Holy Man'. It reached No. 96 on Billboard — outperforming the next two Beach Boys albums — and sold nearly 250,000 copies. A planned solo tour was cancelled when record company support was withdrawn. Wilson performed selections from it during the 1977 Beach Boys tour. Though he dismissed it as having 'no substance', it has since gained cult status and critical esteem.

Pet Sounds

The Beach Boys · 1966

Written mostly with advertising lyricist Tony Asher after Brian Wilson stepped back from touring, this eleventh Beach Boys album replaced the group's own playing with hired Los Angeles session musicians and spent an unprecedented budget chasing a more introspective, orchestrally arranged kind of pop than the band had attempted before.
