Groovin' High
Dizzy Gillespie Big Band · 1990
A 1945 bebop composition by Dizzy Gillespie, first performed in February and preserved in full on December 29, 1945, by Armed Forces Radio Service. It uses the chord structure of the 1920 standard 'Whispering'. It is a pleasant medium-tempo tune demonstrating Gillespie's skill in fashioning interesting textures using only six instruments. It features a two-bar unison figure by Gillespie and Charlie Parker at the opening and a Gillespie coda at the end. Parker's 16-bar solo is praised for its lovely, logical, melodic construction. It was regarded as the first famous bebop recording. It sounds radically different, harmonically and rhythmically, from the swing popular at the time.
