Eric Dolphy · 1964
Out to Lunch! is Eric Dolphy’s only Blue Note album, recorded in 1964 with Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis, and Tony Williams. It is often considered his magnum opus. Dolphy declared 'Everyone’s a leader in this session'. He praised Hutcherson’s vibes as 'freer' and 'more open' than piano, Davis’s bass for leading 'somewhere else', and Williams for playing 'pulse' not 'time'. The music holds to construction for thirteen bars, then releases into freedom. A unison duet between Dolphy and Davis delivers lyrical weight. The album showcases Dolphy’s fully developed avant-garde yet structured compositional style rooted in tradition.
