Hot Buttered Soul
Hot Buttered Soul is a landmark Southern soul album that redefined structure, scale, and authorial control in Black popular music. Recorded across Memphis and Detroit in 1969, it features four extended tracks—including a 12-minute 'Walk On By' and an almost 19-minute 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix'—built on live Hammond organ and vocals, conducted by Hayes while performing, and augmented by Detroit-arranged strings and horns. Its production deployed pre-delay reverb to unify geographically split sessions. It established Hayes as a visionary auteur, not just a performer, and remains foundational to soul, R&B, and film scoring.
