Surrealistic Pillow
Jefferson Airplane · 1967
Surrealistic Pillow is Jefferson Airplane’s second studio album, recorded over 13 days in late 1966 at RCA Victor studios in Hollywood. It marks the arrival of Grace Slick and Spencer Dryden, and features songs by Slick, Balin, Kantner, Kaukonen and Spence. Producer Rick Jarrard enforced tight commercial discipline: no onstage jams, no marijuana, heavy reverb on the stereo mix. Jerry Garcia contributed arrangements and suggested the title but received no formal production credit — only 'spiritual advisor'. The album launched the band internationally and became a defining document of the Summer of Love.
