Lightnin’ Hopkins · 1959
Lightnin' Hopkins (1959) is a solo acoustic blues album recorded in a rented one-room apartment in Houston using one microphone. Lightnin' Hopkins performs guitar and vocals; Samuel Charters supervises and engineers. The session yielded ten unvarnished, first-take tracks—skeletal, naked in its loneliness, haunting in its despair. No band, no overdubs, no electric instruments. Its power lies in proximity, silence, and decay—the acoustics of the room itself becoming part of the performance.
