In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

Neutral Milk Hotel · 1998

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is Neutral Milk Hotel’s 1998 sophomore album, recorded July–September 1997 at Pet Sounds Studio in Denver under producer Robert Schneider. Its sound is defined by Mangum’s plugged-in acoustic guitar—recorded via Neumann U 87 microphones—and shaped by heavy compression, tube pre-amp proximity, and cassette saturation applied to every instrument. Musicians were isolated in separate rooms; electric guitar was rejected for failing to capture Mangum’s timbre. The quartet lineup enabled layered arrangements incorporating singing saw and uilleann pipes. Lyrical themes draw from Anne Frank’s diary but resist linear narrative. Initial sales were modest and reviews mixed, yet its production rigour and instrumental palette mark it as the band’s most fully realised work at release.
