Issued in the United Kingdom in 1967, West Meets East grew from the relationship between Ravi Shankar and Yehudi Menuhin and their 1966 Bath Festival appearance. Its broad title can obscure the particular people involved. Tabla player Alla Rakha, pianist Hephzibah Menuhin and tambura player Prodyot Sen also contribute to the programme.
A pedagogical artefact, not a concert document. Recorded in New York in 1957, it uses spoken introductions and concise performances to frame Hindustani classical music for Western listeners. Its sound is defined by three acoustic instruments in a dry studio space: sitar, tabla, tambura. Nothing else enters the frame.
