Sarah Vaughan
Sarah Vaughan · 1950
The 1955 EmArcy album 'Sarah Vaughan' — reissued as 'Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown' — is Vaughan’s only recorded collaboration with Clifford Brown. It features Vaughan’s voice, Brown’s trumpet, and a tight ensemble arranged and conducted by Ernie Wilkins. Vaughan reconfigures melody so deliberately that lyrics lose sense — linguistic phrasing replaced by musical phrasing. Brown’s bop virtuosity anchors the session. It is one of the most important jazz-meets-vocal sessions ever recorded. None of the listed tracks (East of the Sun, Ain’t Misbehavin’, etc.) appear on this album. The film citations are irrelevant to this record.
