Seasons in the Abyss is Slayer’s fifth studio album, recorded across three Los Angeles studios between March and June 1990. Produced by Rick Rubin and co-produced by Andy Wallace, it was the band’s first release on Def American. It combines the speed of Reign in Blood with the melodic development of South of Heaven. The album features grim vocals, frenetic guitars, sonic distortion, tremolo strumming, and chromatic extensions. Its dual-vocal arrangement on 'Temptation' resulted from an accidental playback of two Tom Araya takes. It peaked at No. 40 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold in 1992. The title track’s music video — filmed at the Giza pyramids — was the band’s first.
South of Heaven is Slayer’s 1988 fourth studio album, recorded in Los Angeles with Rick Rubin. It was the only Slayer album the band discussed before writing. They slowed tempos, dropped distortion, and softened vocals—not to soften the music, but to reframe it.
