Tenor Madness
Tenor Madness is a 1956 Prestige Records album by Sonny Rollins, notable for the title track—the only known recording featuring both Rollins and John Coltrane. Rollins assembled the rhythm section from Miles Davis's 'First Great Quintet' (Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones), with Coltrane appearing exclusively on the 12-minute title track. The session occurred two weeks after that same quartet recorded with Davis for the albums Workin', Relaxin', and Steamin'. The title track's B-flat blues melody, though credited to Rollins here, originated as Kenny Clarke's 'Royal Roost' in 1946. Other tracks include Rollins's original 'Paul's Pal', a blues reinterpretation of 'When Your Lover Has Gone', the ballad 'My Reverie', and a fast 4/4 treatment of Rodgers & Hart's 'The Most Beautiful Girl in the World'. Critics regard the album as among Rollins's finest early work and a landmark of 1950s modern jazz combo recordings.
