Aja

Steely Dan · 1977

Aja is a studio-built jazz-pop record defined by precision, segmentation, and elite execution — not feel, not band identity, not room sound.

Can’t Buy a Thrill

Steely Dan · 1972

Can’t Buy a Thrill is Steely Dan’s 1972 debut, written by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, recorded in August 1972 at the Village Recorder in Los Angeles with producer Gary Katz. It establishes their signature blend of rock, jazz, Latin music, R&B, and blues, executed with sophisticated studio production and cryptic, irony-laced lyrics. Fagen sings most leads; Jim Hodder sings 'Midnite Cruiser'; David Palmer joins late to sing 'Dirty Work' and 'Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me)'. Four completed tracks were left off: 'Running Child', 'Sacajawea', 'Megashine City (Talkin’ About My Home)', and 'Gullywater'. Singles 'Do It Again' (No. 6) and 'Reelin’ In the Years' (No. 11) charted; 'Dirty Work' became a rock radio staple.

Countdown to Ecstasy

Steely Dan · 1973

Countdown to Ecstasy is a technically exact, lyrically sardonic jazz-rock record made under time pressure — less a band album than a series of studio-built arguments about taste, irony, and control.

Pretzel Logic

Steely Dan · 1974

Pretzel Logic is Steely Dan’s decisive turn from band to studio construct — dry, precise, and ruthlessly edited.
