20 Golden Greats was first issued in Britain in 1978, collecting recordings associated with Buddy Holly and the Crickets from 1956–58. It also circulated as Buddy Holly Lives. The release date belongs to the retrospective, not to a newly assembled performing group.
The 'Chirping' Crickets is the debut album of The Crickets. Its sleeve documents the original line-up: Buddy Holly (lead vocals, lead guitar), Niki Sullivan (rhythm guitar), Jerry Allison (drums), and Joe B. Mauldin (bass). The recordings were issued under the group name because they featured dubbed backing vocals — a marketing distinction from Holly’s solo releases. The band name was chosen for legal reasons, to avoid conflict with Holly’s prior solo recordings.
