Out of the Cool
Out of the Cool is a 1960 jazz album by The Gil Evans Orchestra, recorded in two sessions in November and December 1960 and released in 1961 on Impulse! as one of its first four albums. It features a distinctive integration of written and improvised material, with notable contributions from Elvin Jones (shakers on 'La Nevada'), Jimmy Knepper (melody on 'Where Flamingos Fly'), and others drawn largely from Evans' recent Jazz Gallery ensemble. The album marks a stylistic evolution toward greater freedom in Evans' orchestral writing and arranging, building on earlier works like Great Jazz Standards and arrangements for Helen Merrill. Its production values and gatefold design reflected Impulse!'s high standards from its inception. Personnel included Johnny Coles, Jimmy Knepper, Tony Studd, Budd Johnson, Ray Crawford, Ron Carter, and Elvin Jones, among others. Track durations and recording dates are precisely documented, with 'Sister Sadie' added later as a CD bonus track. The Penguin Guide to Jazz later hailed it as Evans' masterpiece under his own name and a landmark in jazz orchestration. The 2021 reissue entered the Billboard Jazz Albums Chart at No. 11. The album's musical identity centers on rhythmic innovation, textural nuance, and fluid boundaries between composition and improvisation.
