‘Cloud Nine’ is the first Temptations album with Dennis Edwards and the first fully realised psychedelic soul record from Motown — made after Otis Williams told Norman Whitfield to copy Sly & the Family Stone’s ‘Dance to the Music’. It replaces balladry with traded vocals, hard-hitting drums, and droning organ lines. ‘Runaway Child, Running Wild’ stretches to nine minutes of rhythmic escalation. The record won Motown its first Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Group Performance.
