Modern Vampires of the City is Vampire Weekend’s third studio album, released in May 2013. It marks their first collaboration with an outside producer — Ariel Rechtshaid — and their first use of piano, acoustic guitar, and organ as central instruments. Written in Rostam Batmanglij’s Brooklyn apartment and a Martha’s Vineyard cottage, it was recorded across five locations including Downtown Studios (NYC), Echo Park Back House, Vox Studios (LA), Slow Death Studios (Burbank), and Batmanglij’s apartment. Digital voice modulation appears in 'Diane Young' and 'Ya Hey', continuing a technique first used on 'California English' from Contra. Ezra Koenig described it as 'darker and more organic' and 'very much the last of a trilogy.'

Vampire Weekend (2008) is a self-produced debut recorded across a basement, a barn, two apartments, and Tree Fort studio in Brooklyn — featuring soukous guitar lines, harpsichords, and strings, with 'really echoey drums' from the barn session. It blends indie pop, Afropop, and chamber music under the joke-name 'Upper West Side Soweto'. Released January 29, 2008, it landed with precision, not posture.
