Morning Phase is a companion piece to Sea Change. It uses nearly all the same musicians. It was recorded across three phases: Nashville (2005), Third Man Records (2012), and Los Angeles (early 2013). It features orchestral arrangements by Beck’s father. It is folk-infused. It shares mood and genre with Sea Change.
Mutations is a live-recorded, country-influenced 1998 album built from Moog keyboards, acoustic guitars, and string arrangements. It rejects Odelay’s sampling and hip hop textures in favour of room-captured performances. Its somber tone, contractual friction with Geffen, and Grammy win for Best Alternative Music Performance mark a decisive turn toward restraint and interiority.
Mellow Gold is a lo-fi, genre-blending 1994 album recorded on a four-track in two LA homes. Beck performed most instruments and co-produced with Tom Rothrock, Rob Schnapf, and Carl Stephenson. Its sound is deliberately degraded, satirical, and texturally dense — built from home recordings, obscure samples, and sparse guest contributions. It launched Beck’s major-label career but resists cohesion, favouring collage over continuity. Its ideas orbit absurdism, sampling, and the myth of the corrupted artefact.
Odelay is a 1995 album recorded primarily in the Dust Brothers’ home studio in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, after Beck abandoned an earlier acoustic album of somber, orchestrated folk tunes made with Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf in 1994. Only 'Ramshackle' survived that session. The Dust Brothers’ hip-hop–influenced, layered production — informed by their work with Beastie Boys, Tone Lōc and Young MC — shaped the album’s sound. Their record-filled studio supplied many of the album’s samples. Musicians worked 16-hour days, starting from scratch each day. The album blends country, blues, rap, jazz and rock using cut-and-paste, sample-heavy techniques.
Sea Change is a 2002 folk and singer-songwriter album by Beck, recorded live in Los Angeles with Nigel Godrich and a core group of session musicians. It abandons sampling and irony in favour of acoustic textures, orchestral arrangements, and emotionally direct lyrics rooted in Beck’s breakup with Leigh Limon in 2000. Critically acclaimed as his finest work, it prioritises space, silence, and sincerity over momentum or artifice.
