Morning Phase is Beck’s twelfth studio album. It is a companion piece to Sea Change. Recording began in Nashville in 2005, resumed in 2012 at Third Man Records, and concluded in Los Angeles in early 2013.
How it sounds, and how it was made
It sounds like a return to the acoustic textures and slow tempos of Sea Change. Nearly all Sea Change musicians returned, except Nigel Godrich. Beck’s father David Campbell contributed orchestral arrangements. The album was recorded across multiple sessions: in Nashville in 2005, at Third Man Records in 2012, and over three days in Los Angeles in early 2013 with core collaborators Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Roger Joseph Manning, Jr., and Smokey Hormel.
What lands
The reunion of the Sea Change ensemble lands. The orchestral arrangements by Beck’s father land. The three-day Los Angeles session lands — a concentrated physical release after years of incomplete work.

It does not break new ground. It does not feature Nigel Godrich. It does not reject its predecessor’s mood or personnel. It does not foreground electronic production or rhythmic urgency.
