Bon Iver, Bon Iver

Bon Iver · 2011

Bon Iver, Bon Iver is a 10-track album released June 17, 2011. Recorded at April Base Studios — a remodeled veterinarian clinic in Fall Creek, Wisconsin, built mainly over a defunct swimming pool — it marks an ambitious musical departure from the debut. Each song represents a place. Justin Vernon built the record himself but brought in bass saxophonist Colin Stetson and pedal-steel guitarist Greg Leisz to shift his role as author. 'Perth', begun in early 2008, opens the album as a Civil War-sounding heavy metal song. 'Minnesota, WI' features finger-picked guitars, double bass drums, and distorted bass saxophone. 'Holocene' reflects on geological epochs and human scale. 'Beth/Rest' is horn-heavy and cited by Vernon as his proudest track.

For Emma, Forever Ago

Bon Iver · 2007

For Emma, Forever Ago is a folk record defined by its limits — one room, one microphone, one voice multiplied, one guitar tuned to itself. It is not raw; it is meticulously assembled. It does not feel like confession — it feels like architecture.
