When the Pawn…

Fiona Apple · 1999

Fiona Apple's second album arrived in 1999 with a title long enough to distract from almost anything. The poem behind it answered hostile reactions to a magazine profile. The songs deserve to be heard beyond that defensive gesture: they examine the difficulty of recognising your behaviour while remaining caught inside it. Jon Brion produced the record, expanding the settings around Apple's voice and piano.

Extraordinary Machine

Fiona Apple · 2005

Extraordinary Machine is Fiona Apple’s third studio album, released in October 2005 after she rejected Jon Brion’s completed 2003 version and rebuilt it from scratch with Mike Elizondo and Brian Kehew. It was recorded across multiple spaces — Ocean Way Recording, the Paramour Mansion (a 1923 building), Cello Studios, Abbey Road Studios, and finally Phantom Studio — but only the latter’s piano-and-drum foundation appears on the final record. Two tracks from the Brion sessions remain unchanged; one new song was added. The album is stylistically eclectic but grounded in live instrumentation: piano, vocals, and drums by Abe Laboriel Jr. and Questlove. It reflects Apple’s insistence on authorship over accommodation — not a refinement, but a replacement.

Fetch the Bolt Cutters

Fiona Apple · 2020

Fetch the Bolt Cutters is Fiona Apple’s fifth studio album, recorded from 2015 to 2020 primarily in her Venice Beach home with Amy Aileen Wood, Sebastian Steinberg, and Davíd Garza. It uses GarageBand, found-object percussion, and domestic space as core instruments. The album consists of 13 self-produced tracks, won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album, and its lead single 'Shameika' won Best Rock Performance. It was in final stages as of September 2019 and released digitally on April 17, 2020.

The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do

Fiona Apple · 2012

The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do is Fiona Apple’s fourth studio album, released 19 June 2012. It was recorded secretly between 2008 and 2012 without Epic Records’ knowledge, co-produced by Apple and drummer Charley Drayton, and defined by sparse, physically engaged arrangements — featuring timpani, celeste, kora, autoharp, bouzouki, marimba, truck stomping, thighs, pillow, and 'voice of pain'. It received critical acclaim, peaked at number three on the Billboard 200, and was nominated for Best Alternative Album at the 2013 Grammys.
