Lennie Tristano
Lennie Tristano · 1956
A 1956 Atlantic album pairing four tape-manipulated studio experiments (1954–1955) with five unedited live recordings (11 June 1955, The Sing-Song Room, Confucius Restaurant, New York). Studio tracks use overdubbing and tape speed shifts; 'Turkish Mambo' layers three conflicting left-hand rhythms. Live tracks rely on contrapuntal group listening, with no pre-set harmony or tempo. Bassist Peter Ind played on the album and later defended the tape techniques as legitimate artistic tools. The 1949 free improvisations 'Intuition' and 'Digression' are not on this record—but their conceptual lineage informs its live side.
