Ella and Louis

Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong · 1956

Ella and Louis was released in 1956, the first of Fitzgerald and Armstrong's three Verve albums together. Norman Granz selected the ballad repertoire and produced the session. Armstrong had the final say over songs and keys, making the partnership a practical arrangement as well as a marquee pairing.

Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy

Louis Armstrong · 1954

Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy is a 1954 Columbia studio album by Louis Armstrong and His All Stars, featuring eleven Handy-associated compositions. Velma Middleton sings on five tracks. The 1997 CD reissue restored the original track listing and added rehearsal sequences, an interview with W.C. Handy, and a joke. It is described as Armstrong’s finest record of the 1950s and a masterpiece.
