What the record is and where it came from
Adele’s fourth studio album. Released 19 November 2021. Made after six years. Shaped by divorce, anxiety, motherhood, and therapy. Recorded with trusted collaborators to create a ‘safe space’.
How it sounds, and how it was made
The vocal tracks are original demos. The album was made in a ‘safe space’ with fewer collaborators than on 25. Adele worked with Greg Kurstin, Max Martin, Inflo, Tobias Jesso Jr., Ludwig Göransson, Shawn Everett, and Shellback — all people she felt comfortable with. Kurstin co-wrote and co-produced six songs. ‘I Drink Wine’ was cut from 15 minutes after label feedback. Voice notes from conversations with her son appear on ‘My Little Love’.
What lands
The voice. The pauses. The voice notes. The length of ‘My Little Love’ and ‘To Be Loved’. The piano-and-strings clarity of ‘Easy on Me’. The gospel-tinged swell of ‘Hold On’. The jazz-inflected pacing of ‘I Drink Wine’.
What does not
It does not hide behind production polish. It does not avoid silence or repetition. It does not offer resolution as closure — only as continuation.
The ideas inside it
Divorce. Motherhood. Therapy. Anxiety. Self-destruction. Self-reflection. Self-redemption. Honesty as obligation — especially to her son.
Who should hear it, and who should not
People who listen for voice as document, not ornament. People who value duration as emotional logic. People who hear vulnerability as compositional choice — not confession. Not people who need rhythmic propulsion, sonic surprise, or lyrical abstraction.
Is it worth your time
Yes — if you want to hear raw, unvarnished vocal documentation of grief, accountability, and repair, shaped by deliberate studio restraint and emotional exposure.
