Baduizm is Erykah Badu’s debut studio album, released on February 11, 1997. It was recorded across nine months in three cities and established her as a leading figure in the emerging neo-soul genre.
How it sounds, and how it was made
It sounds like mid-tempo grooves, sultry conversational vocals, and layered organic instrumentation interwoven with hip-hop beats and jazz sensibility. It was made across Battery Studios (New York City), Sigma Sounds & Ivory Studios (Philadelphia), and Dallas Sound Lab (Dallas) between January and October 1996. Badu performed lead and background vocals, keyboards, drum machine, and music programming, assisted by Madukwu, N’Dambi, Bob Power, Ike Lee III, and Ron Carter.
