Ágætis byrjun

Sigur Rós · 1999

Ágætis byrjun is Sigur Rós’s second studio album, recorded between summer 1998 and spring 1999 with producer Ken Thomas. It marks a stylistic shift from Von, introducing Jónsi’s cello-bowed guitar and orchestration including a double string octet. It features self-reference (backmasked title track in the intro; 'Avalon' as a slowed alternate take of 'Starálfur'), palindromic strings on 'Starálfur', and vocals in Icelandic except for 'Olsen Olsen' and the final section of the title track, both in Vonlenska. It brought international acclaim, spread by word of mouth, and appeared in Vanilla Sky and The Life Aquatic.

Psychocandy

The Jesus and Mary Chain · 1985

Psychocandy is a tightly wound studio record that uses white noise as architecture — not ornament — for pop melody. It is precise, confrontational, and deliberately unromantic in its treatment of 60s influence. It does not sprawl. It does not soothe. It sets terms and keeps them.

Halcyon Digest

Deerhunter · 2010

Halcyon Digest is Deerhunter’s fifth studio album, released 27 September 2010. It was recorded in June 2010 at Chase Park Transduction studios in Athens, Georgia, with engineer David Barbe, by a four-piece band and producer Ben H. Allen. It is the band’s last album featuring bassist Josh Fauver. The final track, 'He Would Have Laughed', was recorded separately by Bradford Cox at Notown Sound in Marietta, Georgia, as a tribute to Jay Reatard. The album artwork, by Atlanta photographer George Mitchell, depicts Dennis Dinion from the 1982 Miss Star Lite Pageant at the Star Lite Lounge on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta — selected for its immediate connection to the music, especially 'Basement Scene'. It was Deerhunter’s first album distributed solely by 4AD worldwide.

Teen Dream

Beach House · 2010

Teen Dream is Beach House’s third studio album, released January 26, 2010, through Sub Pop. It was recorded over three weeks in July 2009 at Dreamland Studios in Hurley, New York. Beach House produced and arranged it with Chris Coady as co-producer. They used mostly the same instruments as Devotion but significantly reduced reverb. The album includes a re-recorded version of their 2008 single "Used to Be" and the lead single "Norway", written on a train in Norway in 2008.

Veckatimest

Grizzly Bear · 2009

Veckatimest is Grizzly Bear’s third studio album, recorded in summer 2008 at Allaire Studios in the Catskill Mountains, produced by Chris Taylor, and distinguished by a new collaborative writing process, tape-based recording with rich sonic detail, contributions from Nico Muhly and additional musicians including the Brooklyn Youth Choir and Acme String Quartet, and instrumental roles including omnichord and string arrangements by band members. The album’s title references Veckatimest Island in Massachusetts, tied to Ed Droste’s family connection to the region. An unmastered version leaked before release, compromising audio fidelity despite the band’s meticulous production efforts. The artwork was created by William O'Brien and selected by Droste, who had known the artist since high school. The album received widespread critical acclaim and appeared in multiple year-end lists, while several tracks were later used in films Jack Goes Boating and Blue Valentine. It was released on May 26, 2009, by Warp Records, debuted at

xx

The xx · 2009

The xx’s 'xx' is a document of constraint: recorded in a converted garage, at night, with two voices, a bass, a drum machine, and one shared microphone. Nothing is added. Nothing is smoothed. It is what fits in the room.

Head Over Heels

Cocteau Twins · 1983

Head over Heels is the second Cocteau Twins album, released on 4AD in October 1983 after bassist Will Heggie left the band. Written quickly by Robin Guthrie and Elizabeth Fraser as a two-piece, it replaced the religious imagery of their debut with love songs built from reverberated guitar and increasingly wordless vocals, and it now stands as an early landmark of dream pop.

Heaven or Las Vegas

Cocteau Twins · 1990

On their sixth album the Cocteau Twins let daylight into their sound: Elizabeth Fraser's voice sits further forward, Simon Raymonde's bass fills the space Robin Guthrie's shrinking studio time left behind, and private upheaval, a new daughter, a dead father, shapes the record from underneath without ever being named.

Loveless

my bloody valentine · 1991

Loveless took My Bloody Valentine from February 1989 to September 1991 to finish, moving through nineteen studios and a rotating cast of engineers as Kevin Shields pursued a heavily layered, endlessly revised sound built on glide guitar and digital sampling. The cost and chaos nearly broke the band's label, Creation Records, but the finished album redefined what a guitar could sound like and became the defining record of the shoegaze scene.
