Karlheinz Stockhausen · 1960

Kontakte is a 4-channel electronic work realized 1958–60 at the WDR studio in Cologne with Gottfried Michael Koenig. It exists in two versions: electronic-only (Nr. 12) and electroacoustic with piano and percussion (Nr. 12+1⁄2). Its title refers to contacts between sound domains, between self-sufficient moments, and between forms of spatial movement. It realises total serialism by bringing timbre, pitch, intensity, and duration under single control—and is the last of Stockhausen’s tape pieces where serial proportions shape more than broad form. Its central passage traces a structural descent: pitch becomes pulse, pulse becomes beat, beat becomes tone. Spatial design advances beyond Gesang der Jünglinge using four-channel diffusion, loudspeakers at square corners, and a rotation table. The score is highly sectionalized, reflecting its moment-based architecture.
